One bag, instead of two (or three)

The ATD1 is an expandable travel backpack that compresses for everyday carry and expands when you need to carry more, moving between long-term travel, short trips, commuting and everyday carry without the need for a different bag every time your needs change.

The backpack was launched in 2018 after years of travel, development and field testing. The idea was simple: instead of choosing between a large travel pack and a smaller daypack, we wanted a backpack that could carry a serious load when traveling, then be compressed into a manageable everyday pack once the destination is reached: a true one-bag travel backpack.

Adjustable volume

Thanks to its emblematic expandability, it's compact enough for carry-on and EDC use when compressed and spacious enough for months of one-bag traveling. Its main feature is a 20–55 L adjustable volume and the result is a backpack designed around changing loads: it can be fully packed and used as your main luggage, compressed to daypack size once at destination, or even fine tuned to find the volume that works somewhere in between, allowing you to rely on the same bag for both long distance travel and daily exploring or commuting.

Versatility as a feature

The ATD1 is intended to be versatile and able to let you travel, work and play, all with one bag. Comfortable enough to be carried for hours on long travel days, its discreet, understated look blends in most settings, concealing your goods and keeping unwanted attention away from them.
The internal organization setup in this minimalist travel backpack is clever, providing enough pockets to store your stuff and not enough to forget where things are, and the whole design makes the pack protective from weather or unwanted access while still being accessible for the user, thanks to the double roll top + back panel clamshell access.
Most importantly, the ATD1 is built to be durable, therefore it is sustainable and will survive long term everyday use.

Built for real use

Designed for long-term travel, the ATD1 was tested for years. Since its launch, it was carried in cities, deserts and forests all over the world, across six continents, ranging from war zones deployments to long term backpacking trips, including unconventional destinations. It was dragged, abused, strapped to motorbikes sides and trucks roofs. In between, it was used as an EDC bag for short trips and daily commutes, reporting zero materials and manufacturing fail or any QC issue that could affect use.
Built with durable materials and construction and with long-term ownership in mind, the pack has a really low rate of second hand sales on backpacks communities, subreddits and social networks groups, showing that this is an object users tend to stick to.

A Classic, updated.

The details that make a bag work are often found through use rather than on a drawing board: the current ATD1 is the result of years of real-world use and successive production updates. Since its first launch in 2018, we did some small changes in terms of materials, construction or branding at each production run. In late 2023, at its 5th production run, the pack was completely redesigned and in 2024 its 6th production run was further improved.

Flexible 23-55 L / 1220,5 - 3356,3 Cubic Inches volume adapts to any situation.

Stretch areas are double layered to keep them snappy for decades.
Softer fabric on back panel and shoulder straps, leading to less risk of cracking in corners and padded areas.
The slanted shape maximizes internal space while keeping load close to the back and a clean aesthetic even when partially loaded.
Luggage pass through.
Side stretch pockets conceal compression straps and fit water bottles, tripods and foldable umbrellas
Top, sides and bottom handles.
Less stitches on liner construction to maximize rain resistance.
Stretch sleeves keep laptops up to 16 inches suspended from the bottom.
Security: The back-panel opening keeps your gear accessible to you while making casual access from behind considerably harder, as the main compartment has no front or side opening when the pack is worn, for peace of mind in crowded areas.
Front compartment has its own volume and effective organization with key leash, pen slot and two pockets.
Removable compression straps for volume flexibility and to carry additional gear.

Since the beginning, our goal was not simply to create bags. Expandable backpacks, pouches that become sling bags and modular straps are our way to develop a true carry system, customizable and adaptable, to help people making the transition between different everyday carry scenarios, or between these scenarios and travel, easier.

Our bags and accessories work better when combined. In order to let users build or expand their ATD Carry System, we set up discounts that can be combined for a substantial saving.

Once this pack is in your cart, expand your ATD Carry System:

1. What is the difference between the ATD1 and ATD2 backpacks?
Both models have expandable capacity and are intended for versatile travel and everyday carry, but the right choice depends on your packing volume and priority use organization. If the ATD1 is the one-bag travel backpack that becomes your everyday pack, the ATD2 is the everyday backpack that can become your travel bag.
Do you want to have a do-it-all backpack? Do you carry a lot of gear everyday? Do you carry a 16' laptop? Do you need a comfortable and widely expandable pack for long-term one bag travel? ATD1 is for you.
Do you need an everyday carry that can serve you on short getaways or trips? Are you a minimalist capable of one bag traveling with limited load? Do you travel with a bigger main luggage and still want a daypack that can expand for unexpected loads? ATD2 is for you.

2. Which ATD Supply backpack is best for everyday carry?
The ATD2 is smaller, lighter and usually more suitable for EDC. The ATD1 can be a good choice too, if carrying a lot of gear or bigger laptops daily and for those who want to have fewer bags to do it all.

3. Which ATD Supply backpack is best for one-bag travel?
The ATD1 is bigger and more comfortable to carry under heavy load. The ATD2 can be a good choice too, if the travel is short or the user is minimalist enough.

4. What are the advantages of an expandable backpack?
An expandable backpack allows its carrying volume to change according to the load. This can be useful when moving between a compact everyday setup and a larger travel load, allowing use of the same backpack in different situations.
An adaptable design may also accommodate purchases, extra clothing or other items picked up during a trip, or groceries picked up at the end of a commute, without requiring a second bag.

Rome wasn't built in a day, nor is your pack's fit. The current laminated fabric is structured and relatively firm when new: at the beginning, the pack feels rigid and shoulder straps may feel stiff to some. Time and use will allow all materials to stretch and conform to your body. Plus, Curv® frame sheet is straight when new but will shape on your back with regular use, thanks to your body heat.
Load the pack, tighten the shoulder straps and use it daily to make the fit become yours, like with a good pair of jeans or a leather jacket. Good things take time.

Clean your pack with mild detergent and line dry it away from direct sunlight. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach, don’t machine wash or tumble dry it. Outer DWR treatment may wear off over time but it is easily restorable with spray coatings for outdoor gear.
