Compact when you need it, expandable when you don't.

ATD2 is a compact and expandable backpack designed for commuting, everyday carry and short-term travel — or long-term, if you are minimalist enough.

Its volume goes from roughly 18 to 31 litres, with around 25 litres sitting in the sweet spot for both everyday use and travel. Versatility is the key feature here: compressed, the ATD2 stays compact enough for commuting, work and daily carry. Expanded, it gives you the extra capacity needed for short trips or a minimalist one-bag travel setup.

Use it as your daily backpack with extra room for the unexpected trip to the grocery, expand it for a weekend or a bunch of days away, or pair it with your larger checked luggage if you want a compact, carry-on compatible travel companion that is still expandable enough for shopping and extra load.

Designed, used and refined

After ATD1 Backpack’s success, one of the most frequent requests I received was to complete the ATD Supply offer with a smaller pack. Intrigued by this challenge, I didn't want to simply scale its bigger brother down. If the ATD1 is the one-bag travel backpack that becomes your everyday pack, the ATD2 had to be the everyday backpack that can become your travel bag. Here you can read more about ATD2 Backpack's development process

Adjustable volume

Thanks to its expandability, it's spacious enough for carrying your essentials and extra clothing and compact enough for carry-on. It can be compressed to daypack size once at a destination for daily exploring or commuting.
On the organization side, the ATD2 follows the same approach as the ATD1: enough pockets to store your stuff, not enough to lose it.
Comfortable enough to be carried for hours, the whole design makes the pack protective from weather or unwanted access while still being accessible for the user, thanks to the double roll top + back panel clamshell access, and the fast magnetic closure.
The ATD2 keeps the discreet, understated and restrained look of the ATD family. No unnecessary visual clutter, just a compact backpack designed around changing needs to work equally well on a commute, in an airport, at a desk or on a weekend trip, concealing your goods and keeping unwanted attention away from them.

Built for long-term use

The goal here was to build a durable compact backpack that can keep doing its job for a long time, in daily use and on the road, using robust construction and premium materials.
As per the ATD1, the current ATD2 is the result of years of real-world use and successive production updates. The second production run brought further changes to the bottom construction, shoulder-strap geometry, load lifters, compression straps, front organization, hardware and padded areas. The updated construction also allows shorter torsos to find a comfortable carry position.

Flexible roughly 18-31 L / 1098 - 1892 Cubic Inches volume adapts to any need and makes the pack extremely versatile.
U-shaped zipper on back panel allows for top, side and clamshell opening.
Top quality materials and almost paranoid construction: we have zero report of an ATD2 that ever failed on his user.
100% Post-consumer recycled fabrics for real sustainability
Fabrics are laser-cut (almost unique in the bags industry) to reduce the risk of fraying.
Hidden or clean finished stitches protect both skin and thread from friction.
Softer fabric on back panel and shoulder straps, leading to less risk of cracking in corners and padded areas.
Stretch areas are double layered to keep them snappy for decades.
Expandable Roll top construction with stiffeners and one point closure via Fidlock® magnetic buckle for quick access.
The slanted shape maximizes internal space while keeping load close to the back and a clean aesthetic even when partially loaded.
Luggage pass through.
Side stretch pockets conceal compression straps and fit water bottles, tripods and foldable umbrellas
Top, sides and bottom handles.
less stitches on liner construction to maximize rain resistance.
Stretch sleeves keep laptops up to 15 inches suspended from the bottom.
Security: The back-panel opening keeps your gear accessible to you while making casual access from behind considerably harder, as the main compartment has no front or side opening when the pack is worn, for peace of mind in crowded areas.
Front compartment has its own volume and effective organization with key leash, pen slot and two pockets.
Removable compression straps for volume flexibility and to carry additional gear.
Removable, Lightweight Curv® (self-reinforced polypropylene) frame sheet.
Removable ambidextrous sternum strap and hip belt
Paracord zippers pulls help access and reduce noise.
OneWrap Velcro® removable strips for webbing management.
PALS on bottom for a Bike light or pouch.

Since the beginning, our goal was not simply to create bags. Expandable backpacks, pouches that become sling bags and modular straps are our way to develop a true carry system, customizable and adaptable, to help people making the transition between different everyday carry scenarios, or between these scenarios and travel, easier.

Our bags and accessories work better when combined. In order to let users build or expand their ATD Carry System, we set up discounts that can be combined for a substantial saving.

Once this pack is in your cart, expand your ATD Carry System:
- add a second ATD2 with 25% discount at checkout.
- add an ATD1 backpack and get this pack with 25% discount at checkout.

1. What is the difference between the ATD1 and ATD2 backpacks?
Both models are minimalist backpacks that have expandable capacity and a versatile design intended for both travel and everyday carry, but the right choice depends on your usual packing volume and priority use. ATD1 is a durable travel backpack that doubles as a commuter backpack, while ATD2 is a durable commuter backpack that can also serve you as a travel companion, both alone and combined with another luggage.
If the ATD1 is the one-bag travel backpack that becomes your everyday pack, the ATD2 is the everyday backpack that can become your travel bag.
Do you travel indefinitely or long term? Do you want to have a do-it-all backpack? Do you carry a lot of gear everyday? Do you carry a 16' laptop? Do you need a comfortable and widely expandable pack for one bag travel? Do you need your travel pack to compress enough to serve as a carry on backpack? ATD1 is for you.
Do you want a versatile commuter backpack? Do you need an everyday carry backpack that can also serve you on short getaways or trips? Are you a minimalist capable of one bag traveling with limited load, also for longer periods? Do you travel with a bigger luggage but still want a carry on backpack that can expand for unexpected loads? ATD2 is for you.

2. Which ATD Supply backpack is best for everyday carry?
The ATD2 is smaller, lighter and usually more suitable for EDC. The ATD1 can be a good choice too, if carrying a lot of gear or bigger laptops daily and for those who want to have fewer bags to do it all.

3. Which ATD Supply backpack is best for one-bag travel?
The ATD1 is bigger and more comfortable to carry under heavy load. The ATD2 can be a good choice too, if the travel is short or the user is minimalist enough.

4. What are the advantages of an expandable backpack?
An expandable backpack allows its carrying volume to change according to the load. This can be useful when moving between a compact everyday setup and a larger travel load, allowing use of the same backpack in different situations.
A backpack that expands is an adaptable design that may also accommodate purchases, extra clothing or other items picked up during a trip, or groceries picked up at the end of a commute, without requiring a second bag.

Rome wasn't built in a day, nor is your pack's fit. The current laminated fabric is structured and relatively firm when new: at the beginning, the pack feels rigid and shoulder straps may feel stiff to some. Time and use will allow all materials to stretch and conform to your body. Plus, Curv® frame sheet is straight when new but will shape on your back with regular use, thanks to your body heat.

When new, the clamshell opening zipper could get stuck on the corners: the binding tape in that area has a lot of fabric layers in it, it just needs some break in to fold under the zipper runner.
To make the break in process faster, open the zipper in the laptop sleeve and firmly push the frame sheet toward the bottom: this will reduce the pressure on the binding tape itself making it easier to fold.

Load the pack, tighten the shoulder straps and use it daily to make the fit become yours, like with a good pair of jeans or a leather jacket. Good things take time.

Clean your pack with mild detergent and line dry it away from direct sunlight. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach, don’t machine wash or tumble dry it. Outer DWR treatment may wear off over time but it is easily restorable with spray coatings for outdoor gear.
