The ATD1 is an expandable travel backpack that compresses for everyday carry and expands when you need to carry more, moving between long-term travel, short trips, commuting and everyday carry without the need for a different bag every time your needs change.
The backpack was launched in 2018 after years of travel, soft goods development and field testing. The idea was simple: instead of choosing between a large travel pack and a smaller daypack, we wanteda backpack that could carry a serious load when traveling, then be compressed into a manageable everyday pack once the destination is reached: a true one bag travel backpack.
Adjustable volume
Thanks to its emblematic expandability, it's compact enough for carry-on and EDC use when compressed and spacious enough for months of one-bag traveling. Its main feature is a 20–55 L adjustable volume and the result is a backpack designed around changing loads: you can fully pack it and use it as your main luggage and compress it to daypack size once at destination, or even fine tuned to find the volume that works somewhere in between, allowing you to rely on the same bag for both long distance travel and daily exploring or commuting.
Versatility as a feature
The ATD1 is intended to be versatile and able to let you travel, work and play, all with one bag. Comfortable enough to be carried for hours on long travel days, its discreet, understated look blends in most settings, concealing your goods and keeping unwanted attention away from them. The internal organization setup in this minimalist travel backpack is clever, providing enough pockets to store your stuff and not enough to forget where things are, and the whole design makes the pack protective from weather or unwanted access while still being accessible for the user, thanks to the double roll top + back panel clamshell access. Most importantly, the ATD1 is built to be durable, therefore it is sustainable and will survive long term everyday use.
Built for real use
Designed for long-term travel, the ATD1 was tested for years. Since its launch, it was carried in cities, deserts and forests all over the world, across six continents, ranging from war zones deployments to long term backpacking travels in unconventional destinations. It was dragged, abused, strapped to motorbikes sides and trucks roofs. In between, it was used as an EDC bag for short trips and daily commutes, reporting zero materials and manufacturing fail or any QC issue that could affect use. Built with durable materials and construction and with long-term ownership in mind, the pack has a really low rate of second hand sales on backpacks communities, subreddits and social networks groups, showing that this is an object users tend to stick to.
The backpack has also been independently reviewed and tested by carry-focused publications and reviewers including Carryology, The Perfect Pack, Bo Ismono, Ryuku and Rushfaster.
A Classic, updated.
ATD Supply develops its products in-house, from pattern to prototype, because the details that make a bag work are often found through use rather than on a drawing board. The current ATD1 is the result of years of real-world use and successive production updates, rather than a fixed design released once and left unchanged. Since its first launch in 2018, we did some small changes in terms of materials, construction or branding at each production run. In late 2023, at its 5th production run, the pack was completely redesigned and in 2024 its 6th production run was further improved.

Outer Fabric: Challenge Sailcloth Ecopak® EPLX600. A waterproof laminate of 600d fabric, X Ply net and RUV film, all made out of 100% post consumer recycled textured Polyester.
Lining Fabric: Challenge Sailcloth RBC®200. A 200d plain wave, post consumer recycled Polyester, PU coated and impregnated with eco-friendly C0 DWR treatment.
Back Panel / Shoulder Straps Fabric: Challenge Sailcloth RBC®600. Basically the external fabric of the laminate used on the rest of the pack, a 600d plain wave, post consumer recycled Polyester canvas, PU coated and impregnated with eco-friendly C0 DWR treatment.
ACU Packing Cubes are great to organize the load. This pack will fit 2 Large / 4 Medium / 1 Large + 2 Medium cubes with room for approximately another M cube on top.
Rome wasn't built in a day, nor is your pack's fit. The current laminated fabric is structured and relatively firm when new: at the beginning, the pack feels rigid and shoulder straps may feel stiff to some. Time and use will allow all materials to stretch and conform to your body. Plus, Curv® frame sheet is straight when new but will shape on your back with regular use, thanks to your body heat. Load the pack, tighten the shoulder straps and use it daily to make the fit become yours, like with a good pair of jeans or a leather jacket. Good things take time.
Product Care
Clean your pack with mild detergent and line dry it away from direct sunlight. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach, don’t machine wash or tumble dry it. Outer DWR treatment may wear off over time but it is easily restorable with spray coatings for outdoor gear.
